It’s been too long since I have posted. Here is what’s been happening with Inez P.E. Since the last post we have had two Family Fitness Nights, Dance & Climbing, and another round of Circuit training. The Dance & Climbing night was the best attended yet with over 80 people in attendance. The best part was that almost everyone participated in the dancing part. Also everyone that wanted to climb climbed, including several parents.
Last Friday’s Circuit training went well. The attendance was at over 60. Everyone went through the 27 station circuit which worked every major muscle group.
The Family event for February will be a Family Movie Night. The date is TBD. The fifth grade students will vote on the movie to be shown.
This Friday December, 2 will be our next Family Fitness Night. The event starts at 5:30 and will go until the last person who wants to climb climbs. In class our next two units will be climbing and dance, so I thought that I would do both for FFN. This is a first. These are usually two separate nights, but I’ve run out of time to host two events before winter break. We will go through the dances that I teach during our dance unit, then we will do some climbing. I will keep belaying until everyone has had the opportunity to climb. As always I expect everyone to participate, so be prepared to SHAKE YOUR GROOVE THING!!
The results of the Inez Fitness Challenge are in and the top class is Mr. Ledezma’s 5th grade class. Their averaged scores are; Pacers 50.3, Push-Ups 10.4, Crunches 7, Modified Pull-Ups 15. The second place class was Ms. Harvey’s 5th grade class. Their averages were: Pacers 47.3, Push-Ups 8, Crunches 17.2, Modified Pull-Ups 9.5. Third place was Mrs. Lancaster’s 4th grade class. With averages of: Pacers 46.7, Push-Ups 8, Crunches 10.8, and Modified Pull-Ups 10.4.
Every student did their very best on all tests. The second Challenge will take place during the second trimester. The goal of the second Inez Fitness Challenge is to be the class that improves the most, which means if everyone works hard to increase their scores, even by only one, their classes average will increase.
WE ARE INEZ!!
In an effort to encourage students to “Do Their Best” during fitness testing, all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes will participate in the INEZ FITNESS CHALLENGE. All 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students participate in the Fitness Gram Fitness Test, which measures each student’s level of physical fitness. The tests include the “Pacer Test” (Cardio Respiratory Fitness), 90° Push Up Test (Muscular Strength),Curl Up Test (Muscular Endurance), Modified Pull-Ups (Muscular Strength and Endurance), and Sit and Reach Test (Flexibility Test). I will also use a bioelectrical impedance scale to measure each student’s weight and % body fat. All individual results remain confidential. Parents will receive a report at the end of testing. You can find a link to the Fitness Gram “Healthy Fitness Zone “ chart under P.E. Links.
After each class has finished their testing I am going to average the score for each test. The class with the highest average on the most tests will win the Fitness Challenge award. That class will be the holder of the trophy until we test the second time. The second time the students participate in fitness testing, the “team” class that shows the greatest improvement will win the trophy. If everybody can improve their score by even 1, their team will improve. The goal is to encourage students to be more physically active between tests in order to improve their personal best, which will in turn improve their team score.
“DO YOUR BEST ROCKETS!!”
Every year I ask my fifth graders to name our class assistant. This year anyone can participate. Write a story describing who I am and why I am at Inez. The person with the best story gets to name me and wins lunch with Mr. A. Turn your stories in to Mr. Anderson by the end of September.
Thanks to the Inez family, the fall picnic was a great success. Beautiful weather, wonderful people, and good music, that’s all we need for a fun event. Pictures will be added soon. We will do it again next year. Keep an eye out for information on our next family event.
Friday, September 16, 5:30-dark, will be our first Fall Family Picnic. Every year we host a spring picnic/talent show which is always well attended, so I decided to try a “meet and greet” fall version. I will set up several games and cooperative activities for families to play. I will also set up Karaoke for anyone brave enough to sing. As always there will be dancing. I’m looking forward to seeing you all there.
WE ARE INEZ!!
Every year one of the first units that I teach is Cooperative Games. This is also one of my favorite units because students have to learn how to work with their new classmates to accomplish the tasks given. All students, regardless of motoric ability have a role to play. The activities are intended to promote the awareness and the practice of concepts, attitudes and behaviors that comprise teamwork and cooperation.
